MacBook USB C port is not working

McKinney, TX MacBook USB C port is not working

Is your MacBook Not Charging? Is your MacBook dead and will not turn on even after you plug in the charging cable? Is your peripherals connected through USB-C port are not being detected by your MacBook? Is your MacBook’s USB C port faulty or damaged? Can you see your USB C broken on you MacBook?

USB C port also known as USB type C, is the most latest type of Universal Serial Bus (USB) connector. There are many types of USB connectors  that has been in the market and they are mainly used to establish the connection between your computer and the peripherals. USB type C connectors tend to have a high speed of data transfer than the predecessors. In new MacBook models type-c connectors have a huge importance and it needs to be working for you to use your MacBook smoothly. Some models of MacBook only have type c port as a connector and also a charging port so, if your USB C isn’t working upto its standard you can have charging and power issues with your MacBook. Your MacBook USB C might not be working due to either a software issue or a hardware issue. Let’s look at few ways you can try to resolve a type faulty USB C on your MacBook:

  • If your type-c charging port ins’t responding we recommend you to run soft reset on your MacBook device. Running a soft reset will not restore your MacBook, so your files will be intact but it will lear out any errors that might have caused the issue. You can try doing this on newer MacBook models. First, make sure that your MacBook is completely turned off. Press and hold the power button for 10 0seconds and release the power button. Give it about few seconds and power on your device. After the device is completely on check your usb c connection and see if they are working properly.
  • Another important steps is to reset your SMC (System Management Controller). SMC is a chip on a logic board of intel base MacBook device which controls the vital physical components and hardware functions of different components such as fans, power supply, status lights, etc. You cannot reset SMC on latest MacBooks with Apple Silicon chip, but it is possible for apple with intel chips. To reset the SMC on your Macbook:
    • Turn off your MacBook device.
    • Press and hold Right Shift, Left Control key, Left Option Key for 7 seconds and then press and hold power button for another 7 seconds. If your MacBook starts do not get distracted, keep on holding those four buttons for full 7 seconds and release the keys.
    • Give it about few seconds and turn on your device back to check and see if your USB C are working fine.

If the software resets did not solve the issue of MacBook USB C port not working, then you might be having issue on a hardware level. For hardware level issue you can first run diagnostics to find if there is anything wrong with your MacBook device. In Apple devices, including MacBook, there is a way users can run Apple diagnostics, also known as Apple hardware test (AHT), If you ever feel like there is any issues involving your hardware of the MacBook, you can run this test and find out what is wrong with your device.

Steps to run diagnostics on MacBook with Intel Chips:

  • Place your MacBook on a flat surface like an office desk or a study table with proper airflow.
  • Make sure your MacBook is turned off.
  • Make sure that there are no external components that are plugged in to the device
  • Hold the D button on your device’s Keyboard, and turn on the MacBook.
  • Keep on holding the D key till you get to the screen where you are asked to choose language, or be able to see a process bar that indicates your diagnostics process status

If you are on a Macbook with apple silicon chip try the following steps for diagnostics:

  • Place your MacBook on a flat surface like an office desk or a study table with proper airflow.
  • Make sure your MacBook is turned off.
  • Make sure that there are no external components that are plugged in to the device
  • Press and hold the power button on your Apple Silicon MacBook
  • Continue holding the power button till you are brought to a screen with startup options
  • Then, Press Command and D on your keyboard

After the diagnostics process is complete it should show you the results of your test with the issues if there were any. There will also be a reference code provided for the issue, which you can use to refer to Apple for more support. If you still don’t find any issues on your MacBook but your USB port is still not working, it might need replacement. Our team of professionals at ifixhut will run a diagnostics and troubleshoot to find out why your MacBook is acting weird and help you find a right solution at a reasonable price.

How do I run a complete diagnostics of my MacBook?

There are different ways to run diagnostics on a MacBook if you are using an intel chip device or an Apple silicon (M chip) device. So, make sure which MacBook you have before you start the process. If you have an intel chip device, as soon as you turn on your MacBook press and hold the “D” key and release it once it takes you to a diagnostics progress section. If you are using a MacBook with Apple silicon, press the power button to turn on your device and hold on to that power button till it takes you to the startup options page, then press command + D.
